In today's post we will visit Marrakesh in Morocco. The Jardin Majorelle in Marrakech is one of the most visited sites in Morocco. It took French painter Jacques Majorelle forty years of passion and dedication to create this enchanting garden in the heart of the “Ochre City”.

The garden covers nearly two and a half acres. Collections of cacti, exotic plants and trees are landscaped to emphasize each one’s unique beauty. The paths allow us to see how the architectural style of the villa-studio, now transformed into a museum, is set off by vibrant colours dominated by its “Majorelle blue”. The pools, streams and fountains create a haven of serenity.

Jacques Majorelle used to say for his garden “ vast splendours whose harmony I have orchestrated… This garden is a momentous task, to which I give myself entirely. It will take my last years from me and I will fall, exhausted, under its branches, after having given it all my love.”

Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé discovered the Jardin Majorelle in 1966, during their first stay in Marrakech.“We quickly became very familiar with this garden, and went there every day. It was open to the public yet almost empty. We were seduced by this oasis where colours used by Matisse were mixed with those of nature. And when we heard that the garden was to be sold and replaced by a hotel, we did everything we could to stop that project from happening. This is how we eventually became owners of the garden and of the villa. And we have brought life back to the garden through the years.”

Since 2010, the Jardin Majorelle has been the property of the Foundation Pierre Bergé – Yves Saint Laurent, a not-for-profit foundation officially recognized by French law.

More than 600,000 people, both tourists and Moroccan citizens, visit it every year. Open every day of the year, the Jardin Majorelle employs 90 people, and the profit it generates benefits other projects in Morocco.
