In our world there are thousands of places that you can admire. Huge Buildings, deep oceans, breathtaking waterfalls, unique lakes and many more.

Todays post is about a lake in Arizona. The Lake Powell it is the second largest man-made reservoir by maximum water capacity in the United States. The reservoir is named for explorer John Wesley Powell, a one-armed American Civil War veteran who explored the river via three wooden boats in 1869.

Lake Powell is a water storage facility for the Upper Basin states of the Colorado River Compact, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, and New Mexico. The Compact specifies that the Upper Basin states are to provide a minimum annual flow of 7,500,000 acre feet to the Lower Basin states, Arizona, Nevada, and California. Lake Powell water levels rise from the end of April to right around July 4th. The rest of the year, for the most part, the water level falls. The scenery is so unusual Lake Powell has been used as the setting for many movies, the latest, Gravity with Sandra Bullock.

Lake Powell has 96 major side canyons and when is full stretches back 186 miles up the Colorado River channel. Lake Powell has four major water sources:

* The Colorado River.

* The Dirty Devil River.

* The Escalante River.

* The San Juan.
