Holy Saturday is an importand day for Christianity. A day that remind's to all of us that Jesus was crucified to take all of our sins. That is the reason why in today's post i would like to recommend you a breathtaking place here in my country.
Meteora Monasteries is a place located in Thessaly region in Greece. The nearest town to visit Meteora Monasteries is Kalambaka.
There are 6 monasteries built on natural sandstone rock pillars. Access to the monasteries was originally and deliberately difficult, requiring either long ladders lashed together or large nets used to haul up both goods and people. This required quite a leap of faith.
The 6 monasteries are :
The Holy Monastery of Great Meteoron - This is the largest of the monasteries located at Metéora. It was erected in the mid-14th century and was the subject of restoration and embellishment projects in 1483 and 1552. The building serves as the main museum for tourists.
The Holy Monastery of Rousanou/St. Barbara was founded in the middle of 16th century and decorated in 1560.
The Holy Monastery of St. Stephen is a small church built in the 16th century and decorated in 1545. It was damaged by the Nazis during World War II who believed it was harboring insurgents and was abandoned. Nuns took it over and reconstructed it.
The Holy Monastery of St. Nicholas Anapausas, built in the 16th century, is a small church.
The Holy Monastery of Varlaam – The Holy Monastery of Varlaam is the second largest monastery in the Metéora complex. It was built in 1541 and embellished in 1548.
The Monastery of the Holy Trinity is on top of the cliffs. It was built in 1475.
The monasteries was source of inspiration for many films or even games. The monastery of Holy Trinity was a filming location in the 1981 James Bond movie For Your Eyes Only, The Holy Monastery of St. Nicholas Anapausas was an inspiration for St. Francis Folly in the computer game Tomb Raider and Tomb Raider: Anniversary and Michina, the main setting of the movie Pokémon: Arceus and the Jewel of Life is based on Meteora!!!
