The word "Fest" derives from the latin word "Festivus" which means Happy. Who can not be happy in a festival which is celebrated with tones of water!!!
Songkran festival is celebrated every year in Thailand between 13th - 15th of April and is Thailand's New Year celebration. In the past the festival was originally set through astrological calculation but now there is already a fixed date for the celebration.
The first day is the last day of the old year. Houses and villages are properly cleaned on the first day. Perfume, water and flowers are also prepared for the New Year. The second day of the festival is the "day of no day", a day that falls in neither the old year or the new year. The last day of the festival marks the start of the new year.
Songkran has traditionally been celebrated as the New Year for many centuries, and is believed to have been adapted from the Sankranti Hindu festival. It is now observed nationwide, even in the far south. However, the most famous Songkran celebrations are still in the northern city of Chiang Mai, where it continues for six days and even longer. It has also become a party for foreigners and an additional reason for many to visit Thailand for immersion in another culture.
